After a brief stay in Edinburgh, he visited Perth, Bannockburn, Callander, Inversnaid, Glasgow, Oban, Inveraray, and Rothesay, and returned again to Glasgow. Scope and Contents

The author was one of a party who made a tour of inspection of Gottland in connection with a scheme, promoted by Robert Chambers, the publisher, to settle British farmers there. Their report was entirely adverse. The volume includes a printed prospectus of the scheme, relevant newspaper articles, and correspondence with Chambers, 1850, and is illustrated with several water-colour sketches.

The contents are compiled from official and other documents, and consist of: rolls of service of the officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who went to the Crimea; rolls of promotions, honours, and awards; detailed returns of the state and strength of the battalion, including medical reports; a journal of the campaigns and battles in which the battalion took part.

The notebook is illustrated with occasional sketches, ink and watercolour, and with two military poems.
